Baking From Scratch vs Boxed Mix

June 13, 2017 Posted by Kyndall @ 6 Cakes & More Recent No Comments

This seems to be such a popular topic and even a heated debate at times. Here’s my honest opinion on baking from scratch vs boxed mix!

I pride myself deeply on baking completely from scratch. I honestly believe that there is no reason that we need to have so many chemicals in our foods. I have 6 children, a husband, and run a baked goods catering business. When I am cooking and baking for any of them, ingredients are very important. There are so many ridiculous and excessive additives and chemicals that are added to foods, so I try to avoid them whenever possible. I don’t think that baking from scratch makes baking any harder or easier.

I’ve heard people defend using boxed mixes in a bakery as making sure things are consistent, and that it comes to quantity over quality. Two things about this: it is possible to stay consistent when baking from scratch. That’s why you measure your ingredients. I fully disagree with quantity over quality. Whether it be an order for 12 cupcakes or 12 dozen, quality will always come before quantity.

I enjoy being in the kitchen and coming up with new, delicious recipes for my family and clients. I think baking from scratch gives me much more freedom than a boxed mix. Yes, I know that you can “doctor” boxed mixes but in the end, there is so much in that box that you don’t need and honestly shouldn’t want. I highly encourage everyone to at least just try to bake something from scratch. This could be your 1st time baking or your millionth. For this reason, I have many simple recipes on my site. I will personally guarantee you that you will notice the difference in taste and quality and you will never go back to those terrible boxed mixes. What are you waiting for? Go pick one and enjoy a delicious treat that you made from scratch!
